2005 Annual Report
From the President

Dear Friends, Supporters, Donors, and Adopters,

Finally, I am finding time to write this letter and put this 2005 annual report together.  I realize that
I am about 6 months behind, but can only say that life and work got in the way of a more timely
annual report!  2005 was a busy year at Knick O'Time Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation (KOTHRR).

Way back in January, 2005, Stephanie Wendorf and I decided that the time was right to begin the
process of creating a non-profit horse rescue. We worked very hard on our application.  By April,
we had achieved our 501(c)3 status from the Internal Revenue Service.  Before we even had all our
board members on board, or should I say 'in the saddle', we had our first rescued horses!  Now we
were off and running!

Our goal for 2005 was to rescue 2 horses a month.  By December, we had rescued 16 horses (more
on these lovely, lucky horses later in the annual report).  And the really wonderful news is that we
were able to find homes for 14 of them!    These horses came from a variety of circumstances.  Some
were surrendered by their owners for a number of reasons.  Others came from a Premarin rescue
facility.  We also got horses at the auction, from the slaughter yard, and private purchase.  Their
ages ranged from 4 months to the late-twenties!  Each of these horses was ready and deserving of a
second chance and life in a good home.  Some needed rehabilitation, all needed another living
situation.

This was also a year for building relationships.  We received a horse that had been donated to a
local therapeutic riding center, but just was not suited for that work.  We were able to find a good
adoptive home for him, where he is now a pleasure horse, living in someone's back yard pasture.
We have approved Rocky Mountain Equi-Rhythm as a foster care facility for KOTHRR horses.
They provide equine-assisted therapy to at-risk and vulnerable youth and teens.

2005 was a busy year!  2006 appears to be even busier!  I am very pleased with the progress we
have made.  And thank you so much to all of you who have donated time, money, horses, and
in-kind donations.  Without you, we could not have rescued and rehabilitated as many horses as
we did.  And that is what it is all about - the welfare of the horse!

Thanks again to everyone who helped make our first year successful!

Program Information and Highlights

Here are some highlights from our first year of operation.

Rescues
We are very pleased that we were able to rescue sixteen horses in eight months of operation.  These
horses came from private owners who surrendered them for a number of reasons, from auctions
(where we outbid the slaughter yard buyers), from the slaughter yard, and through private sales
(where the owners could not afford to give the horse away, but did not want them to go to auction
and risk that they would end up at the slaughter yard).

Adoptions
Fourteen of the sixteen horses rescued were placed in caring, approved adoptive homes in 2005.
One of the horses who was not adopted is in a longer-term rehabilitation program.  We are sure
that Norm will become available for adoption in 2006.  One foal's adoption was pending at the end
of 2005.

Inca Program
In the Inca Program, KOTHRR (Knick O'Time Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation) retains ownership
of the horse throughout his/her lifetime. The adoption fees are reduced by 50% for the horses that
are placed through this program.

Through the Inca program, owners of private surrender horses can request that their horses be
placed into loving andapproved homes, with KOTHRR retaining ownership throughout the
lifetime of the horse. This way, the horses get the opportunity to find wonderful homes, without the
risk of ever ending up bouncing from home to home, at an auction, going to slaughter, etc.

While our regular adoption contract does specifically
request that the horses be returned to us in the
event that the adoptersare no longer able/willing to keep them, the Inca Program guarantees that
they may never be resold, as the ownershipis never transferred.

Fundraising Efforts

In 2005, KOTHRR participated in the following fundraising 'events'

A Tupperware Fundraising 'Non-Party'
With help from Nancy Intermill (in Nebraska!), we held a small Tupperware non-party.  Thanks
to Sharon Mihalic and Beth Cole for sharing the Tupperware books with so many friends and
co-workers!

Donated Tack
Thanks to all of you who donated used tack and horse equipment.  Sales of these items provide a
small, but steady, source of income to buy feed and services for the horses.

2006 KOTHRR Calendar
A major endeavor in 2005 was the production of the 2006 KOTHRR Calendar.  Thanks to Nancy
Reilly, board member and photo-wizard, we were able to create a beautiful calendar, full of
gorgeous pictures of rescued horses.  We printed 200 calendars and sold 197 of them!  And the
printing was sponsored by one of our generous donors, so all the proceeds went to care for the
horses!
And thanks to Fox Creek Mobile Equine Outfitter, Boulder Horse and Rider, and Make Scents for 'selling'
calendars for us!

Grant Writing
We began the development of a grant writing program in 2005.  As it often takes two to three
years of work to be considered by granting authorities, we will continue with this endeavor, taking
the long view of our efforts.

Private Donations
We are very pleased that we were able to raise enough money to sustain our efforts in 2005,
through both cash (check) and in-kind donations from private individuals and foundations.
Thanks to all of you!  (Please see the list of donors in this annual report.)
